Scottish producers made their mark as buyers and sellers at the Simmental Society’s breed sale at Carlisle, where averages improved on the year.

The champion, Overhill House Mccoy, from Richard McCulloch, Armadale, West Lothian, topped the sale at 10,000gns when selling up to Orkney with Liam Muir, Stromness. Backed by Islavale genetics, this December 2021-born entry brought out by stockman Scott Gilmore, is a son of Islavale Heston, out of Islavale Caitlin, by Islavale Wesley.

Michael Durno, Auchorachan, Glenlivet, sold Auchorachan Monarch, for 8000gns to Aberdeenshire producers, Messrs Craig and Co, Peterhead. This first prize August 2021-born entry is by Lykke Iceman, and bred from Auchorachan Autumn, a Omorga Samson daughter.

The same home sold the third prize, Auchorachan Maserati for 6500gns to Messrs McKinnel, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. An 18-month-old, he is a son of Auchorachan Hercules and bred from the Team Fergus daughter, Auchorachan Letta.

Jim and Patricia Goldie of the Newbiemains herd, Annan, sold Newbiemains Mammoth for 7000gns. This second prize winner is a son of Newbiemains Jetset and out of Newbiemains Joy, which goes back to Islavale Frontier. He sold to Northumberland with Messrs Sutherland, Belford.

The reserve champion, Scotland Hill Mccoy, from Thomas Hill and Ruby Wright, Mill, Daw Lane, Wadworth, made 7000gns. October 2021-born, he is a son of Clonagh King Eyes, out of Scotland Hill Avril 2 and was knocked down to Alistair Warden, of Skelfhill, Hawick.

Manor Park Mickey from Clive Houldey, Waterbeck, Lockerbie, made 6500gns, selling to Messrs Hamilton and Son, Abington, Biggar. December 2021-born, he is by Corskie Ebay.

Rooklea Newyear also achieved 6500gns for A Trafford, Springfield, Greysouthern, Cockermouth. Forth in his class, he is a son of Losning Iver and sold to Messrs Booth, Nether Heage, Belper, Derbyshire.

Messrs McKinnel and Sons, Newton Stewart, also forked out 6000gns for Braegarrie Maverick, from Robert Currie, Pinclanty, Girvan. He is by Woodhall Ferrari.

Among the females a top price of 3800gns was paid for the March 2021-born heifer, Midhope Matilda from WJ Hollingsworth, Midhope Hall, Midhopestones, Sheffield. A daughter of Delfur Chas, she is out of Midhope Festival and found a new home with Messrs Booth, Belper, Derbyshire.

The reduction sale of the Chestermann herd on behalf of Nadia and Nick Gwynne, Castlewigg, Whithorn, peaked at 3300gns for the 2016-born cow, Chestermann Data Nonne 3, which sold with heifer calf at foot. The cow is by Overhill House Data 12, and has been running with Clonagh Nuclear Explorer. The October-born calf, Chestermann Empire Nonne 4, is by Sterling Empire. Final bidders were Messrs Wilson, Kilwinning.
