Earlier, there were the Concorde - supersonic flights across the Atlantic - that people fancied but could rarely afford. Now United Airlines is betting big on its business travellers to break the barrier.

Key Highlights

  • Airlines are in a race to not only fly faster but also to balance the expenditure on fuel and reduction of carbon emissions.
  • United Airlines of the USA has struck a deal for supersonic aircraft that Boom Supersonic will deliver to it for operations to begin in 2029.
  • Here is everything you need to know.

The average direct flight time from London to New York is 7 hours 55 minutes, according to Finance.co.uk. The fastest direct flight 7 hours 40 minutes for the distance of 3,462 miles or 5,572 km.

A leaf from the past:
Before mass travel through the aviation sector really took off from the 1960s, people crossed the globe in majestic passenger ships, reports Lowtechmagazine.com. While a sailing ship needed one to two months to cross the Atlantic, the first steamships made the journey in just 15 days. The SS United States crossed the Atlantic in 3 days and 12 hours, which is a record not yet broken.

Boom! United Airlines has a surprise announcement:
United Airlines has announced that it will buy 15 supersonic planes that can hit speeds of 1,300mph and slash the time it takes to fly from New York to London to 3.5 hours. To make this possible, it will buy the supersonic planes call "Overture" from Boom Aero.  United Airlines Holdings Inc. is jumping into the potential market for supersonic travel with the first firm order for Boom Technology Inc.’s Overture aircraft, reports Bloomberg. It is, of course, taking a huge bet on top echelon business travellers who will readily pay double the price for speedier travel across the ocean waters.

"We're the first U.S. airline to sign an agreement for @boomaero 's ‘Overture’ airliners which are expected to be net-zero carbon and connect 500+ cities in nearly half the time. Taking off in 2029: http://boomsupersonic.com/united #BoomSupersonic," tweeted the airline.

"Boom Supersonic @boomaero · Jun 3 Introducing the United supersonic fleet.
@United will purchase up to 50 Overture airliners and fly the fleet on 100% sustainable aviation fuels. http://boomsupersonic.com/united #BoomSupersonic," tweeted Boom Supersonic.

10 things about Boom Aero's Overture airliner:

  1. It is on the anvil, but the first commercial airline service isn’t expected until 2029
  2. The jet called Overture will fly at 60,000 ft.
  3. Overture will fly not only twice as fast but twice as high as today’s subsonic jets.
  4. That means less turbulence and a smoother ride.
  5. Boom Supersonic promises "Features include 'ample' personal space, conventional in-seat entertainment screens, and contactless technology"
  6. United Airlines plans to extend the service to other sectors but is right now working only on New York to London for inaugural service
  7. LA to Sydney which is typically 15+ hours would take a little more than eight hours.
  8. The carrier said potential routes include flying Newark to London in just three and a half hours and San Francisco to Tokyo in just six hours
  9. The supersonic jets will cost $200 million a plane.
  10. The 35 plane deal is valued at $3 billion, reports Bloomberg. No discounts offered by Boom.

Boom Aero writes: “We see ourselves as picking up where Concorde left off and fixing the most important things which are economic and environmental sustainability." They are possibly referring to the record-making flight that Concorde managed between New York and London in just under 3 hours. The fastest ever flight between New York and London was recorded by the supersonic Concorde aircraft in 1996, which completed the journey in just 2 hours and 52 minutes, says a Forbes report.

The Concorde that was operational till 2003, was fuel-intensive, and only Air France and British Airways flew the aircraft routinely. The Overture will be 75% cheaper to operate, Blake Scholl the Founder/CEO at Boom Supersonic told Bloomberg.

Rules governing sound-barrier.

  • Supersonic flight is banned over land in the US.
  • At sea level, the speed of sound is 760 miles per hour (1,223 kmph).
  • Overture jets will fly at around 1,300 miles per hour, or Mach 1.7.
  • That makes Overture's speed about twice as fast as conventional jetliners.
  • Like the Concorde, it will break the sound barrier only over oceans.
