Approached from north heading south from Milton Lilbourne, continued past sign which said unsuitable for motor vehicles. At first it was quite broken up but condition improved further on and wasn’t too bad. At the southern end of the lane was a car park. Rode along the byway heading south west for about seven hundred and fifty meters where there was a fork with the byway heading south west and the other track more to the west. Rode up the west track as far as field edge. On foot towards tree clump, past memorial trees to fallen soldiers, look as if planted fairly recently. At clump went to south as map seemed to show it on that side. No sign of it. No obvious high point. A few places of dense vegetation which could hide the pillar. Headed back east through trees. Then decided to get some help from here. More detailed map indicated it being on the north side of the clump. Found a worn path through the trees. Spotted an ivy covered lump on the north side of the path. Prodding to check if it could be a pillar, turned out to be a tree stump. If I had turned around here and looked south I would have seen the pillar. I think it played a trick on me. Carried on east for about fifty meters and looked at some of the other photographs. Headed west again and then saw the pillar. Well hidden. Brownish paint fading. Cap missing. No views although good views from outside the trees towards Martinsell. Time saved riding to end of track was lost walking around the clump.

I am indebted to Caroleengel below for her excellent advice about the "unsuitable" road to the north west, which made reaching the trig an easy experience. Route along field edge has a series of memorials to soldiers who died in the two World Wars. Trig was very hidden by the wood in full foliage, and was a little dark and gloomy on this cloudy morning - I envy MylesM his sunny November photos! Barbed wire fence in front of trig was easily stepped over, but the break in the fence a bit beforehand is a better access point, as there's a path that runs just inside the wood to the trig. Nevertheless, it was a simple bag with an enjoyable walk which offered some fine views of nearby Martinsell.

Red-patched pillar, open cap with all sight holes open. No views within the woods, but just a short jog northwards there is a lovely vista as appreciated by William Cobbett on the 28th August 1826 during one of his rural rides when he sat on his horse 'for half an hour' admiring the scene, ' though I had not breakfasted'! Not much has changed since his time, except for the ubiquitous pylons. Also visited the nearby Giant's Grave Long Barrow.

A very pleasing reddish hue to this pillar, almost granite-like. A short trespass required to access as no public row to it. Farmer was ploughing his field as I did the trespass and he didn't even bother to pass the time of the day with me! Parked at the end of the minor road south of Milton Lilbourne, where the metalled road ends and it becomes a by-way. Pillar is located in an open wooded area standing on a prominent plinth. It had a beech tree trying to cosy up to it, but the secateurs managed to see it off! In good condition other than the plug is missing; all site holes open. Some views, but mainly farming country.

The pillar stands inside a narrow copse between two fields on a downland hill to the south of Marlborough. The site was reached by means of the track starting from the end of the metalled road from Milton Lilbourne. The pillar has patches of red stain and stands on a one foot high plinth. It lacks a cap or plug and has FB S1906. The view from the trig is restricted by nearby vegetation. From the field to the south there is a wide view over undulating downland. The field to the north of the copse looks across to the Marlborough Downs on the other side of the Vale of Pewsey in the north and a lower, flatter landscape of woods and fields to the north east. Nearby the Giant’s Grave Long Barrow on the rim of Fyfield Down has a fantastic panorama to the west.
