Someone at the Waldorf Astoria lit the black-flame candle last night. In the stuff Halloween dreams are made of, Bette Midler revived her Hocus Pocus character Winifred Sanderson at her annual Hulaween bash for the New York Restoration Project. Before dinner and fundraising began inside, Midler arrived at the star-studded event dressed head-to-toe as her popular character from the 1993 film—from Sanderson’s red wig to her high-collared green dress. But even though Midler has been haunting the world as Winifred for more than 20 years, she’s had a few paranormal happenings of her own.

“I think I have a ghost in my country house, yes I do,” she told Vanity Fair on the red carpet. “We built it from the ground up, but I think it might have been a graveyard. Just one side of the house is haunted.”

This year’s host Kathy Griffin (dressed as a living Snapchat, complete with deer filter) had her own insight on matters of the afterlife. She’s skeptical about certain personalities who believe they’ve touched base with the spirit world.

“I want to go up to Demi Lovato and be like, ‘Hey, how’s your ghost?’” Griffin said. “‘Have you seen him or her?”

The comedian would also like an update on Ariana Grande and her personal reports of demons.

“I love Ariana, so when I see Ariana next time, I’m gonna be like, ‘How are your demons? Mine are a nightmare.’”

But when we told Griffin that the one and only Meryl Streep once reported paranormal activity in her Connecticut home during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Griffin changed her tune.

“Meryl Streep has ghosts?” she said, taking a step back. “Meryl says it, it’s real. I wish Meryl would actually be my ghost and just come over.”

Perhaps just as good as Meryl Streep dressed in a ghost costume knocking on your door; however, is Bette Midler, dressed as Winifred Sanderson, discussing how to banish her own spirit friends. The singer, who, later in the night, joined musical talent Darlene Love onstage for a rendition of “The Boy I Love,” said she has a plan for her ghoulish guests.

“We’re gonna have some sage that we grew ourselves. We’re going to burn some sage,” she said. “Get rid of the ghosts.”
