WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE COUPLE AS THEY WERE PUTTING THE FINAL TOUCHES ON THEIR ABSTRACT NATIVITY SCENE. >> WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT HOW LUCKY WE FEEL TO LIVE IN HAMPDEN AND TO LIVE ON THIS STREET. IT’S SUCH A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY. OUR NEIGHBORS ARE AMAZING. IT BRINGS EVERYONE OUT. EVERYONE HELPS EACH OTHER OUT WITH IT. A holiday tradition is back in Hampden, lighting up the neighborhood for all to see.The 73rd annual Miracle on 34th Street lights were officially turned on Saturday night as hundreds gathered to take it all in."We knew we wanted to be on this street. We were very excited when this house was available," said Martelle Esposito, a 34th Street resident.The Esposito family is marking its second Miracle on 34th Street, putting the final touches on their abstract nativity scene."We always talk about how lucky we feel to live in Hampden and to live on this street. It's such a strong sense of community. Our neighbors are amazing. It brings everyone out. Everyone helps each other out with it," Esposito said.Marylanders come from all over to see this decades-old tradition in the 700 block of West 34th Street."It's so good for the community. It's perfect, and the kids love it," said Alan Wirth, a visitor.For some, it's an annual spectacle."I came as a kid growing up, so it was a lot of fun. Now, to live here and give my kid the same experience is really special," said Dan Hunter, a visitor.While for some 12-year-olds, like Khiyah Holc, it's a first time seeing this many lights."First (time) here, it was very overwhelming, but it's very pretty, and I just like the sight of it. It makes me so happy," Khiyah said.This year's display includes dinosaurs on the roof, colorful stoops and even a snow experience."You just wait, your mind is going to be blown," said Danielle Wirth, a visitor.From the all-out house that started it all to the Espositos' fresh take on tradition, families said there's no better way to say "season's greetings" than from Maryland's Miracle on 34th Street."It was a beautiful night. The weather's perfect, and it's opening night and we thought what better way to kick off the holiday season?" said Kendall Hunter, a visitor.The lights will be turned on every night at dark and go until 10 p.m. weeknights and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, all through New Year's Day.
