If you are visiting Colorado Springs for the first time you will notice once thing West which will standout for the enitre trip and that is Pikes Peak. No matter where you are in the Springs you will be able to see Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains. It is the main attraction that brings tourist to Colorado Springs.

Driving Pikes Peak Highway

The Pikes Peak Highway starts in Cascade Colorado, and is a 19 mile toll road to the top of Pikes Peak. Along the drive there are several places you will be able to take breaks and enjoy the wildlife. There are lakes, picnic tables, small trails, great fishing areas and more.

Driving up Pikes Peak takes time you are only allowed to go 25 mph in certain areas for your safety. Please follow the guidelines. It is a one lane up and one lane down the entire trip to the top and if you are not paying attention you could tumble hundreds of feet down. It is best to focus on the road and enjoy the scenery once you make it to the top.

At the Summit there are several of parking spots so you dont have to worry about getting there early.


Driving Down Pikes Peak

There are a few other ways to get up and down Pikes Peak and sometimes hikers who are to tired to hike down might hitchhike down the mountain. This is completely normal and it is ok to say yes or no. Also on the way down watch out for mountain bikers, they get driven up and ride the 19 mile trail back down with amazing scenery and thrilling speeds. So make sure that you keep an eye out for them.


Where Does The Pikes Peak Highway Start

If you are driving from Colorado Springs you will just drive on Highway 24 West towards Woodland Park. once you past the Cave of The Winds and other attractions you will come to one light and you will take a left there on to Pikes Peak Highway there will be signs to help get you on the right direction. You will drive past the North Pole towards the toll road.

 

Costs to Drive Up

Once you hit the toll road part of Pikes Peak Highway it is time to pay. The cost varies for what time of year you are visiting.

May 1 to Nov. 30

  • Adult - $10

  • Child - $4

  • Family Plan - $35

Dec 1 to April 30

  • Adult - $12

  • Child - $5

  • Family Plan - one car up to 5 passengers $40


Opening Hours

The Highway is open all year round but it depends on the weather if they will be open that day. If you are not sure it best to call to see if they are open that day.

  • May 27 through September 3 - 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • September 4 through September 30- 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • October 1 to May 26 - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
