3 Ways To Rise Above Humiliation

Humiliation doesn't have to be debilitating. Three ways to rise above the shame.

You'll feel humiliation at some point in your life. Humiliation about situations that you don't want anyone to know about. Like getting fired instead of being promoted. Getting charged with drinking and driving. As embarrassing as these situations might be, how do you recover from public humiliation?

I've develop an acronym, A.C.T., which is a healthy way to recover from humiliation.

Accept. Accept responsibility for the situation and move on. Admit that you got fired. Admit  that your spouse embezzled money from work. Admit that you got charged for drunk driving. When you accept your mistake then you take away the power from the person who's trying to humiliate you.

Calm. Calm and control your emotions and responses. You might feel angry, frustrated, resentful, guilty and hate toward the person who’s humiliating you. Or, you might be mad at yourself. All of these responses are normal. However, if you respond from an emotional state then you might make the situation worse.

Think before you react. If not then you might regret your decisions. When you think of a solution, examine both the short-term and long-term consequences. Think about the people in your support network. If any of them are toxic then disengage. Think about and stay connected to the people who support you and have your best interests.

You have to choose the best way to live your life in spite of the humiliation.
