BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- Belvidere is known as the “city of murals” and today they add one more to their collection. This time honoring the city's most successful professional athlete.

Dozens of public art lovers gathered in downtown Belvidere as the Boone County Arts Council hosts an unveiling for their newest mural. The mural is a tribute to Belvidere native freed Schulte, who was a professional baseball player, and even hit a home run in the 1933 World Series while he played for the Washington Senators.

"When we can inspire somebody that's young, when we can honor families legacy for someone who continued to contribute to Belvidere. I think that's the Hallmark of what makes up a good community and why these people grow from those communities,” said mural committee chair Jay Allen.

The Boone County Arts Council hopes to continue adding murals to the city to honor those who have contributed to the city and to inspire everyone who visits.
