Samsaran

Mysterious humanoids with pale blue flesh and glossy white eyes, these ancient knowledgeable beings are rumored to not be of this world. A samsaran’s life is not a linear progression from birth to death, but rather a circle of birth to death to rebirth. Whenever a samsaran dies, it reincarnates anew as a young samsaran to live a new life. Their past memories remain vague and indistinct—and each new incarnation is as different a creature and personality as a child is to a parent. Capable of recalling the lessons and failings of their previous incarnations, the samsarans seek to live lives of balance and enlightenment.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Samsarans appear as humans with pale blue skin, solid white eyes with no pupil or iris, and dark hair. A samsaran’s blood is crystal clear, like the water of a pure mountain spring. They are typically on the taller side ranging from 5ft 9 in to over 6ft tall.

Genetics and Reproduction

Originally samsarans where throught to be incapable of giving birth. Intercourse was purely for love and pleasure. Samsarans would populate mainly through a phenomenon they call Aurelia or “true birth”. The process occurs when like souls of other humanoids combine before heading to the boneyard to be judged. The resulting Samsaran would appear as an infant randomly near a village. It has since been found out that Samsarans can in fact give birth but they do not give birth to their own kind. Instead a human is born. This is actually how the 1st human was born in the year 3671. Upon death, such offspring sometimes reincarnate as samsaran children, if they lived their lives in keeping with harmony. Though, this has been found to be extremely uncommon. It was around this time that the normal reincarnation that the Samsarans experienced began to diminish. Sometimes even the most in harmony of beings would not reincarnate and this remains largely a mystery to this day. Some say it was the offshoot of humans that poisoned their kind. Once numbering in the millions only just over fifty thousand remain. Now, samsarans typically give up their human children not long after birth to be raised in human society, where the children grow and live their lives normally.

Gender Ideals

Gender, while physically Samsarans can be male or female it doesn’t have much part in their society or culture. It isn’t uncommon for one to be seen as more masculine or feminine but there are no roles associated with either gender. Most Samsarans identify as some blend of the two and use they/them pronouns unless they say otherwise.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Samsarans prefer to live simple lives of reflection, scholarship, and worship. They try to live their lives free of the ambitions and greed that mortality often imposes, since they view their lives as only the latest incarnation of many to come. Any accomplishments left undone in this current life can surely be achieved in the next, or the one after that. Samsarans’ memories of their past lives are not complete—they most often feel like half-remembered dreams. While most samsarans who die also reincarnate as samsaran children, this is not always the case. When a samsaran has utterly failed at maintaining harmony in their current life, or when they succeeded perfectly at it, their soul instead travels to the Great Beyond to receive its final, long-delayed reward or doom. Samsarans do not keep family names, but often retain the names of their previous one or two incarnations, regardless of gender, as a sort of replacement for a family name to honor their previous lives’ accomplishments or to remind them of their past shames.
