This is a specimen of Samarskite (Yttrium Cerium Uranium Iron Niobium Tantalum Titanium Oxide). The proper name is actually “Samarskite-Y”, with the ‘Y’ standing for Yttrium. This specimen has been analyzed and shown to be Samarskite-Y, but also present in the matrix is Yttropyrochlore-Y. This specimen is comprised of dark glassy Samarskite with a small amount of matrix (and apparently Yttropyrochlore too). Several of the elements making up this mineral are dense and as a result the specimen feels heavy for its size. It measures 3.6cm by 2.7cm by 1.3cm (1.4” by .9” by .5”) and weighs 24.7 grams. It is from Mitchell County, North Carolina, USA. Note: Some of the Rare Earth elements in Samarskite have radioactive isotopes, not to mention the Uranium content, so Samarksite is a radioactive mineral. As such the specimen will ship in full compliance with all laws and regulations, especially USPS Publication 52. Insurance is included in the Packaging & Handling. I combine shipping with other purchases or auction wins.
