LUMBERPORT — If all goes as planned, students and staff will be moving into the new Lumberport Middle School by the second semester of the 2015-16 academic year.
But what will happen to the existing facility once the relocation is completed?
Whenever a school closes in Harrison County, Superintendent Susan Collins says it’s always the hope of the district to sell those buildings to someone who will use them for a specific function.
“Nobody likes an eyesore,” Collins added.
But Anthony Fratto, assistant superintendent of operations and facilities, admits that it can be difficult to find buyers for old schools.
“Not many people in the town of Lumberport need a building like that,” Fratto said. “A lot of these schools are out in places where people just don’t want them.”
But board of education member Doug Hogue still plans to pursue selling the structure so it can be utilized for community activities.
Board member Allen Gorrell shares the same mindset.
“It’s been in that community for so many years,” Gorrell added. “I would hope the community would have interest in converting it into some useful purpose.”
Lumberport Mayor George Hagan said council members and other town officials have not discussed the property in length because they haven’t been approached by the board of education.
