LA LIBERTAD

La Libertad capital of the “Northern Marinera” is a department located in Peru. Its capital is Trujillo. It has two attractions considered World Heritage Sites: Chan Chan and the Rio Abiseo National Park.

The department of La Libertad occupies a long territory on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and thus a large part of its territory encompasses the Andes mountain range. Trujillo is known as the “City of Eternal Spring”, “National Capital of Spring” and as “The Capital of Culture of Peru”. Gastronomy in La Libertad

Typical Dances in La Libertad

La Libertad has a great variety of cultural manifestations. The dances have Spanish, African and indigenous influence. These tried to represent life in the colony and in independence. In some cases it is about ridiculing the oppressors.

• La Marinera: It is the best known dance and represents La Libertad. It is characterized by wearing a handkerchief and as a couple. It is a stately and majestic dance.
• Los Negritos: This dance was performed by the African slaves of yesteryear. It is said that they were rituals. At present masks with black faces are used and the clothing is colorful.
• Quishpi Condor: The dance has Andean origins. Since it comes from a legend. It is said that a poor man was in love with the monarch’s daughter. La Libertad constitutes a wide range of tourist resources such as cultural, historical and natural. In the city of Trujillo, the traditional dance of the Marinera and the celebration of spring stand out.The department of La Libertad presents a relief that goes from the coast, passes through the mountains (Andes) of Ofusco, Julcán and Santiago de Chuco. from Cajamarca to the high jungle (Amazon) on the border with San Martín. The coast has beaches and fertile valleys that are very important for national agricultural production. The Moche culture, famous for its ceramic art, emerged on the coast.

Also noteworthy are the impressive huacas of the Sun and the Moon built by the Mochicas, which measure more than 20 meters; and the El Brujo complex, adorned with impressive figures of dancers and warriors. The city also has a splendid colonial architecture where the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the church of the Company, the monastery of El Carmen and colonial houses stand out. 15 minutes from the city is the Huanchaco spa with its caballitos de totora, light boats that sail the seas since the times of the Mochicas and Chimús, where you can enjoy an exquisite meal based on fresh fish and seafood or simply , enjoy a day at the beach.

CHAN CHAN

It is considered the largest adobe construction. It has beautiful reliefs on its walls that make it extraordinary. Chan Chan was made by the Chimú culture.

HUANCHACO BEACH

This beach is very visited by lovers of the sea and the sun. It is also visited by lovers of adventure sports and surfers. In 2013 it was recognized as a World Surf Reserve.

THE HUACA OF THE SUN AND THE MOON

They are ancient constructions belonging to the Moche culture. It is said that these places were the capital of the Moche culture. The huaca del sol, is made with adobe (earth bricks). It has a pyramidal shape.

The Huaca de la Luna has figures engraved on its walls that represent deities. Aiapaec, known as the slaughtering god, stands out. These murals maintain their vivid colors to this day.

EL BRUJO ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX AND CAO MUSEUM

It is located in the Magdalena de Cao district, Ascope Province. The importance of this place lies in the fact that the tomb of a RULING WOMAN was found. She possibly she was the only woman who had power in ancient Peru. The archaeological complex el brujo, is one of the most important in La Libertad. It is made up of three Huacas:

Huaca Prieta. It dates back to 12,500 BC. They are possibly the remains of ancient sedentary farmers. They did not know pottery.
Huaca Cao Viejo. It is an adobe construction in the shape of a truncated pyramid. It could be a place of sacrifice. In this place the tomb of a woman was found. She is considered to have been a ruler and soothsayer, due to the jewels found and the tattoos still visible.
Huaca Cortada. It is a construction similar to the Huaca Cao Viejo. A cut in half is observed. This is due to the constant excavations by “Huaqueros” in search of treasures.
