Bates from Joseph Dalton Hooker's "Curtis's Botanical Magazine," 1889, L. Reeve & Co. A second-cousin and pupil of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Matilda Smith (1854-1926) was the main artist for the Botanical Magazine from 1887 until 1920 and contributed 2,300 illustrations.
