The "peinlicher Gerichtsordnung" ("Constitutio Criminalis Carolina", 1530) was the first body of German criminal law, prescribing the procedure for judgment of capital crimes. It sanctioned, among the rest, death by fire for witchcraft and the use of torture to obtain confessions.
