A mine railway (or mine railroad or pit railway), is a railway constructed to carry materials and workers in and out of a mine. At first on of wood rails, but eventually adding protective iron, waggons were hauled by men (and children) or horse and donkey. Sometimes steam locomotion by fixed engines outside the mine.

RM2CAWD3G–An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet (1778–1829) and an illustration of his safety lamp. Davy was a Cornish chemist and inventor. He is best remembered inventing the Davy lamp. In 1815 Davy began experimenting with lamps that could be used safely in coal mines. Dangerous Firedamp (methane mixed with oxygen) was often ignited by the open flames of the lamps then used by miners. Davy's lamp used iron gauze to enclose a lamp's flame to prevent the methane burning inside the lamp from passing out to the atmosphere. Davy refused to patent the lamp.

RMG169P8–During the first half of the nineteenth century mining was often at the centre of working class discontent in Wales, and a number of uprisings such as the Merthyr Rising in 1831 against employers were a characteristic of the Industrial Revolution in Wales. The Chartist movement and the 1839 Newport Rising showed the growing concerns and awareness of the work force of their value to the nation. Although the Factory Acts of the 1830s and resultant Mines Act of 1842 were meant to prevent women and boys under 10 years of age from working underground, it is believed they were widely ignored.
