RMRY4XE2–A 1900 illustration of an old sedan chair carried by two bearers. It was introduced in London Sir Saunders Duncombe after seeing one in Sedan (France) and quickly became popular as a mode of public transport throughout Britain, especially in the narrow streets of Edinburgh, Scotland. The removable roof allowed for the tall, elaborate headdresses sported by fashionable ladies at the time and 'link boys' would carry torches at night to light the way.

RMRAPCA2–Filthy streets littered with mud, refuse and excrement made 17th century travel difficult. In 1634 Sir Saunders Duncombe introduced the sedan chair for hire in London. They quickly became popular, being the quickest form of transport in the city, as they could pass down streets too narrow for carriages. They consisted of a seat inside a cabin with a detachable roof, mounted on two poles and carried by two men known as ‘chairmen’, one at the front and one at the rear.
