RM2HGH3X1–A 19th Century illustration of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR), designed and built by George Stephenson. Opened in 1830, it was the first inter-city railway in the world; the first railway to rely exclusively on locomotives driven by steam power; the first to be double tracked throughout its length; the first to have a signalling system; the first to be fully timetabled and the first to carry mail. It was primarily built to provide faster transport of goods and passengers between Liverpool and Manchester and occasionally, a complete circus!

John Blenkinsop (1783–1831) was an English mining engineer and an inventor of steam locomotives, who designed the first practical railway locomotive. In the early nineteenth century, attempts were being made to employ steam power for haulage. In 1811 Blenkinsop patented a rack and pinion system at the side of the track for a locomotive. His engine, weighing five tons, regularly hauled a payload of ninety tons of coal over three miles from the Middleton Colliery, Middletown to Leeds, Yorkshire, England, UK.

RM2DBYJPG–An old engraving George Stephenson’s locomotive of 1815. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. George Stephenson (1781–1848) was an English civil engineer and mechanical engineer, renowned as the ‘Father of Railways’. Stephenson designed his first locomotive in 1814, designed for hauling coal at the Killingworth Colliery north of Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside, England, UK. It was named ‘Blücher’. In 1815 Stephenson improved the design with a direct link between cylinder and wheels using a ball and socket joint. The drive wheels were connected by chains.
