There is no difference whateverin the coloring of the plumage in the sexes, and males andfemales are indistinguishable except by dissection.. 9- Chestnut-Bellied Scaled Partridge. CHESTNUT-BELLIED SCALED PARTRIDGE. ^HIS subspecies, at times indifferently distinguishablefrom the Scaled Partridge, has a very restrictedrange, being found within our limits only in the lowerRio Grande ^alley, in Texas, and across the border ineastern Mexico. Among the foothills of the Rio Grande, about one hundred miles from the coast, as stated by myfriend IMr. Geo. B. Sennett, is the eastern limit of thisbird. In its habits, selection of food, and character ofthe country it dwells in, it closely resembles the ScaledPartridge. Some specimens are strongly and broadlymarked with chestnut on the belly, this at times beingvery dark in color; but this varies greatly, both in hueand in the space it covers, until some individuals are metwith that are very difficult to assign to either the speciesor the race.
