Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), French historian and statesman. Alexis Charles Henri Maurice Clerel de Tocqueville wrote many works on French politics and history. He travelled extensively throughout the USA in the 1830s. His travels formed the basis of his best known work 'Democracy in America' (1835), in which he commented that 'democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality'. He retired from politics after Napoleon III came to power in 1851. Five years later he published 'The Old Regime and the Revolution' (1856). This portrait is based on an 1848 lithograph by Theodore Chasseriau (1819-1856).
