RFM58TYX–A beaded anemone (Heteractis aurora: diameter 25 cms.). Confined generally to sandy areas, where they feed on small prey. They can be identified readily by the beaded nature of their relatively short tentacles, which usually form a striking pattern, as in this instance. Notable also are the lines on the oral disc, which travel towards the centrally located mouth. The formidable tangle of tentacles catch zooplankton passing in the current, which they hold using their sharp and toxic nematocysts, before transferring the food to the animal's mouth. Photographed near Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia.

True enough, the tentacles are constricted at the base and the mesogloea of the tentacles thicker than that of the oral disc, whereby a narrowing is formed at the base of the tentacles, but there is no tentacular sphincter. On account of this it is very improbable that the tentacles are able to loosen themselves. For the present I hold it suitable to place the genus among the Actiniidae. RM2KA0WW4–Anatomy of a coral polyp. Old engraved picture of the coral polyp. Book illustration published 1907. A polyp in zoology is one of two forms found in the phylum Cnidaria, the other being the medusa. Polyps are roughly cylindrical in shape and elongated at the axis of the vase-shaped body. In solitary polyps, the aboral (opposite to oral) end is attached to the substrate by means of a disc-like holdfast called a pedal disc, while in colonies of polyps it is connected to other polyps, either directly or indirectly. The oral end contains the mouth, and is surrounded by a circlet of tentacles.
