F. prolifera (Fig. 379) is an eccentric-looking little Fern, bat so thoroughly distinct from anyother known species that no mistake as regards itsclassification can possibly be made by anyone who hasseen it once. It is usually considered difficult to manage, yet it is free growing when kept under suitable con-ditions : these consist of heat, moisture, and permanentshade. It succeeds well iu a compost of three partsfibrous peat and one part sand, with abundant moistureat the roots. Under such treatment it not only flourishes, but rapidly spreads in all directions, through the rootingof the proliferous extremities of its barren fronds, wherethe young plants thus produced (and without being dis-connected from the parent plant) in turn yield subjectshaving all the characters of a fully-developed specimen.
